UEFA Cup: Dundee United 2 Mypa-47 2 PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 25 August 2005
United incredibly lost a commanding 2-0 half-time lead over MyPa-47 in the second leg of their UEFA Cup qualifier at Tannadice to go crashing out of the tournament on away goals.

A 0-0 draw in the first leg in Finland had left the second leg perfectly poised but there seemed to be no problems for the Scots when Mark Kerr and Collin Samuel shot them into a two-goal interval lead.

However, as complacency set in during the second half, Adriano scored with a 72nd-minute penalty and then with a well-taken goal eight minutes later to stun the home side.

When the final whistle went there was disbelief inside Tannadice before a chorus of jeers sent the shocked home players down the tunnel.

There was moment of panic for the Scots after only 90 seconds which should have warned the Scots when United keeper Derek Stillie carelessly smashed a clearance off skipper Paul Ritchie and when the ball fell fortuitously to Adriano, the Brazilian's attempted lob from just inside the penalty area was saved.

But United recovered and in the 14th minute the Taysiders got the breakthrough with a tremendous goal from Kerr.

Barry Robson curled a free-kick from the right into the MyPa-47 penalty area and when the ball was headed clear by Jukka Lindstrom, the former Falkirk playmaker controlled it 25 yards from goal and quickly drove a powerful right-footed shot past Janne Korhonen and into the net.

Robson did have the ball in the net in the 21st minute with a back-post header but he was adjudged to have fouled Finnish defender Toni Huttunen.

But in the 27th minute the home side double their lead with the best move of the game.

Striker Lee Miller sent Robson away on the left and when the former Inverness player swung his cross in to the box Jim McIntyre flicked the ball on again to Samuel at the back post who wasted no time in slamming his close-range shot past Korhonen.

In the 35th minute Miller forced a wonderful save from Korhonen with a powerful 12-yard header seconds before Niklas Tarvajarvi's angled shot at the other end went narrowly past Stillie's right hand post.

After the interval the home side looked in no trouble but there remained the feeling that the third goal was needed to finish the Finns off.

Samuel was causing problems for the visitors with his pace down the right flank and confident United edged closer as the game went on.

Midfielder Grant Brebner flashed a 25-yard volley high over the bar, Kerr shot wide from closer in and gradually the tiring MyPa-47 players began to lose a little discipline.

In the 67th minute McIntyre beat Finnish defender Hugo Miranda cleverly in the visitors' penalty area but when he stood the ball up at the back post Kerr had to stretch to head the ball off the bar before Korhonen and Lindstrom foiled Miller at the rebound.

However, the game turned on its head in the 71st minute when MyPa-47 got a penalty when Stuart Duff fouled Adriano just after Stillie had made a great save from Tero Taipale.

The Brazilian slotted the spot-kick away with great confidence and instantly a nervousness enveloped Tannadice.

Only a great tackle from Ritchie prevented MyPa-47 substitute Petteri Kaijasilta latching onto an Adriano flick-on.

But in the 80th minute there was disaster for United when Adriano beat the United offside trap and lobbed Stillie to draw the sides level with his second goal of the game.

The Brazilian's protracted celebrations led to a missile coming on from behind one of the goals.

A stunned United threw everything at the visitors and with six minutes to go Robson went clean through on goal but blasted his shot straight at Korhonen and then in the last minute Ritchie blasted over the bar from only 10 yards out.
