ICTTwo first-half goals ensured Inverness Caledonian Thistle progressed to the CIS Insurance Cup quarter-finals with a 2-0 win against another poor United performance.

CALEY Thistle player/manager Craig Brewster finally got one over on the club where he started his career after Inverness dumped Dundee United out of the CIS Cup on Tuesday night.

The veteran striker and his players have failed to taste victory over the Tannadice outfit since he took charge - although United's hoodoo over the Highland capital side stretched back even longer than that. Seven years to be precise.

Brewster had been expected to make changes, but with injuries to captain Stuart Golabek, Ross Tokely, Roy McBain and Craig Dargo, his selection choices were somewhat limited.

Richie Hart, Russell Duncan, Dennis Wyness, Alan Morgan, Liam Fox and Rory McAllister all started with Ian Black and the player/manager on the bench.

United fielded the same players who beat Livingston 2-0 on Saturday and, on paper, they looked the stronger team. But if cup football has proved anything down the years, it's to expect the unexpected and, in the visitors' case, it arrived after just two minutes.

Wyness played a neat one-two with McAllister before picking out the run of Fox who jinked past the defender and curled an unstoppable 30-yarder over the head of bemused United goalkeeper Derek Stillie.

Gordon Chisholm's side quickly regained their composure, however, and should have been level five minutes later. A looping cross from David Fernandez found Barry Robson all on his own inside the box, but from five yards out the former Caley Thistle winger somehow headed the ball onto the post.

The game was flowing from end to end and it was the home side who were next to go close 13 minutes in with Barry Wilson's shot from the edge of the box turned away by Stillie before Morgan fired the rebound across the face of the goal.

Despite a rather lacklustre display from United, they could have been level on the half-hour mark when Fernandez once again found Robson's head, but he was left cursing his luck as the ball came back off the crossbar.

Slightly fortunate not to have gone in at half-time level, Caley Thistle made the most of there letoffs to double their advantage four minutes before the break. Wyness chipped the ball through for the onrushing Wilson and he bundled his way past Stillie before forcing the ball over the line, despite appearing to use his arm in the build-up The visitors brought on Collin Samuel for Stuart Duff at the interval, but even the introduction of his pace couldn't unlock an Inverness defence well marshalled by Darren Dods and Grant Munro.

Indeed, it took United until the 73rd minute to threaten Mark Brown's goal and Caley Thistle's Number One was left helpless again when Robson connected with Wilson's cross only for the ball to hit the post and rebound away to safety.

Suffice to say it wasn't Robson's, or United's, evening with Inverness beating their opponents for the first time since 1998 to progress through to the quarter-finals.
