Terry Butcher's surprise decision to take over at Sydney FC leaves a yawning gap in the dugout at Fir Park. At times, the former England captain seemed to be the only man holding the Lanarkshire club together as they lurched from one financial crisis to another.
Maurice Malpas, his replacement, has his work cut out but he has the right pedigree after long spells on the coaching staff with Dundee United, the Scotland Under-21s and of course Motherwell.
Steven Hammell's defection to Southend United is a blow, as is Scott Leitch's decision to take over at Ross County. However, the addition of Ross McCormack from Rangers could prove a masterstroke by Malpas.
