KillieUnited shrugged off the first-half dismissal of Lee Miller to claim a spirited goalless draw at lacklustre Kilmarnock in the Bank of Scotland Premier League.

Miller was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 39th minute when he was adjudged to have elbowed Killie defender Frazer Wright. Craig Brewster's men defended impeccably from that point though - with central defenders David McCracken and Alan Archibald outstanding - and Jim Jefferies' below-par side were unable to find a winner.

After their fine draw at Rangers last week, it was no surprise United started the game with plenty of confidence. Mark Kerr was running the midfield area and Miller was a lively presence up front, although referee Stuart Dougal took exception to one of his exuberant challenges and gave the forward his first caution in the 10th minute for a foul on Gary Wales.

Miller's enthusiasm mirrored the visitors' approach as a whole and it took a brave intervention from Jason Fowler in his own six-yard box to deny Stuart Duff a clear header and the chance to put his side ahead on 17 minutes. The game had yet to really spark into life, though, and Steven Naismith's powerful volley in the 26th minute, which required a smart save from Derek Stillie, was a rare moment of excitement.

Killie came even closer to opening the scoring two minutes later when Wright headed Garry Hay's right-wing corner inches over Stillie's bar. Barry Robson then went close for the Tangerines with a thumping effort from 20 yards out, which Killie keeper Graeme Smith was pleased to see fly wide of his right-hand post.

But the visitors were reduced to 10 men in the 39th minute when Miller, drafted into the side by Brewster due to Noel Hunt's bout of flu, was given a second yellow card after a clash with Wright just outside the centre-circle. Brewster predictably made a switch at half-time, bringing on Noel Hunt to hold the ball up front in place of Duff, who had been playing in behind Miller but is usually a left-winger.The visitors coped impressively with Killie's early pressure in the second period and Jefferies attempted to pose them a different problem when he brought on winger Stephen Murray in place of ineffective target man Colin Nish.

Murray showed plenty of enthusiasm but Killie were still labouring to cause 10-man United real problems - with Stillie a spectator for the first 25 minutes of the second half. A snap-shot from left-back Hay, which whistled over the United bar in the 67th minute, was as close as Killie came to troubling the former Dunfermline keeper in this period.

The two managers made their second changes almost simultaneously in the 78th minute - but with differing agendas. Jefferies introduced Paul Di Giacomo in place of Wales, the man who had replaced him in Killie's starting line-up, in a bid to trouble the rock-solid United defence with his pace.

Brewster, meanwhile, brought on new defender David Proctor for his debut following his move from Inverness, in place of the tiring Collin Samuel on the right of United's midfield. Ten minutes from time the visitors threatened to grab a shock lead when former Dunfermline striker Hunt found himself with a yard of space in the box and shot just wide of Smith's goal with the Killie keeper flat-footed.

Killie and their fans were becoming increasingly frustrated and Wright tried his luck with a speculative effort from 25 yards which Stillie dealt with comfortably. Jefferies played his last card when Peter Leven replaced Allan Johnston with five minutes left.

Leven almost made an immediate impact when he picked out Naismith with a wonderful pass, but, just as the youngster was about to shoot, Christian Kalvenes made a terrific interception to preserve a point for the visitors.
