Ex-Tannadice forward Jason Scotland returned to haunt his former colleagues with a first-half opener, before ex-Dundee striker Steven Milne put his side further ahead with a lob.Simon Mensing completed the rout with a powerful late header to send the two-time winners spiralling out of the tournament. Craig Conway had come close to open the scoring for United in the sixth minute when Noel Hunt surged past the static Goran Stanic on the left, looping a pinpoint cross to the back post, but the tight angle saw the ex-Ayr man nod into the side-netting. Two minutes later, Saints had a superb chance as Steven Milne forced a corner. Paul Sheerin's set-piece looked bound for no-man's land but Mensing stunned United with an acrobatic overhead kick. With a goal looking certain, Christian Kalvenes rose with a last-gasp header to clear. Scotland looked certain to score in the 31st minute as he broke free of Garry Kenneth in the box, but somehow Derek Stillie pulled off a fantastic save to divert the Trinidadian's net-bound lob. Scotland was in the action again moments later as Milne's superb control over his shoulder left his strike partner clear, a shot-cum-cross being diverted for a corner by Kenneth. United player-boss Craig Brewster could have done better in the 27th minute as the ball landed at his feet from Conway's cutback, but the United forward blazed his shot high over the bar from 20 yards. But it was Scotland who finally broke the deadlock five minutes from half-time. Sheerin picked the ball up from Steven Anderson in midfield, sending a pinpoint ball over the top for the striker to chase. And Scotland superbly threaded the ball past Stillie to put the home side clear at half-time. Saints picked up where they left off after the break, with Milne and Scotland combining to create another great chance. With the ball virtually on the penalty spot, Milne delayed on pulling the trigger, but Scotland pounced once again, forcing another fine save from the United keeper. But Milne would not be denied, putting his side two goals up in the 53rd minute. Kenneth sent a header way too short for Stillie to gather, and Milne lifted a perfect lob over the keeper's head and just inside the crossbar. Five minutes later, Brewster was gifted a golden chance by another wayward header, but the veteran's snap-shot flew inches past Bryn Halliwell's near-side post. Saints looked more than comfortable holding their lead though, and defender Andy Lawrie could have poached another in the 73rd minute, but Stillie yanked the ball to safety.Substitute Collin Samuel reminded Saints the game was still alive though, with a rasping drive which Halliwell did well to parry. But Saints had an instant reply with a wonderful third goal.Darren Sheridan's clever free-kick found Scotland free on the edge of the box, holding the ball up long enough to free Sheerin wide on the left. His cross landed perfectly for Mensing to power a textbook header past the helpless Stillie.
