Dramatic loss sickens Levein PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 17 March 2008
United boss Craig Levein was in an emotional mood after watching his side go close to winning the CIS Insurance Cup Final against Rangers. The Terrors twice led before eventually being forced to take part in a penalty shoot-out that they ultimately lost.
It was a particularly disappointing result for United owner Eddie Thompson, who is continuing his fight against cancer.
Levein admitted after his side's heart-breaking defeat: "It was a huge thing to win the cup for us today, even more than in normal circumstances.
"I saw the chairman after the game but it was very difficult to speak to him.
"It certainly wasn't our day. I don't want to criticise any officials and I'm sure that if Kenny Clark had seen the tug on the jersey he would have given a penalty.
"What a cruel way to lose the game. I want to be as positive as possible but I am just feeling sick for everyone associated with the club.
"I felt that we were comfortable on both occasions that we lost goals. We hadn't weathered a storm, it was more like a slight downpour and then out of the blue we made a couple of mistakes and were cruelly punished."
