Levein Fined by SFA PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 05 August 2008

FinedCraig Levein has be issued with a £5,000 by the SFA for comments he made following the 3-1 farce to Rangers in May.

A statement on the SFA website said: “Dundee United manager Craig Levein has today been fined £5000 by the General Purposes Committee for comments made following the Rangers v Dundee United match on May 10 2008.

“Mr Levein was found to be in breach of the following Articles of Association- 123 - Bringing the game into disrepute, 126 - Criticising the performance of match officials in such a way as to indicate bias or incompetence.”

Levein was angry at referee Mike McCurry for waving away a penalty appeal and ruling a goal offside despite the initial shot being deflected off a defender.

After the match Levein protested: “We had a blatant penalty and he bottled it.

“If it’s not a level playing field, and, if we don’t get the decisions, blatant, important decisions then what is the point of turning up?”

Levein was heavily criticised for his statements by SFA Chief Executive Gordon Smith and SFA President George Peat which led to suggestions that Dundee United would take legal action against the SFA, although this threat was never carried out.

After his appearance on Tuesday, Levein said: "I said what I honestly felt at the time. It was a poor performance and I'm still angry about it.

"I wasn't going to go in and apologise for anything I said."
