 1909 18th August
Dundee Hibs took the field for the first time as they took on Hibs from Edinburgh in a match to mark the opening of Tannadice Park. The game ended with honours even after a 1 1 draw.
21st August The first ever competitive match had an added edge as previous Tannadice tennants Dundee Wanderers, now forced to play all their matches away from home, triumphed 2 1 in a Northern League Match.
1910 23rd April A 1 0 home win over Forfar Athletic Brought the club its first silverware as The Carrie Cup was secured.
7th June The merger of Ayr K and Ayr Parkhouse to form Ayr United left a vacancy in the Second Division which Dundee Hibs, were elected to fill.
20th August No luck on for Dundee Hibs on their debut in the Scottish League as they lost 3 2 at home to Leith Athletic.
1911 25th March The Forfarshire Cup was annexed for the first time with 7000 witnessing a Hibs win over Arbroath in the final at Dens Park. Centre forward Charlie Dunnian scored the only goal of the game.
1913 8th February Hampden Park was the venue for the Club's debut in the Scottish Cup proper. It was, however, an unsuccessful start, going down 4 2 to Queen's Park.
1914 13th December A first appearance in a national final ended in stalemate. Hibs drew 1 1 with Albion Rovers in the Qualifying Cup Final at Tynecastle in front of 11,000 spectators. Rovers eventually took the troph winning a second replay 3 0.
1915 13th March A friendly at Dens Park heralded the inaugural meeting of the two city sides at first team level. Only 4000 saw Dundee confirm their superior status of the time by easily running out 4 0 winners.
1920 20th August Dundee Hibs prime motivators of the break away Central League, played their first league fixture, going down 3 2 at Armadale.
1921
Back in the Scottish League fold again, a 2 2 draw with Bo'ness was seen by 7,000 as Scottish League football returned to Tannadice after an absence of seven years.
1922 12th April The first ever testimonial player was held for a Dundee Hibs player. Willie Linn was the beneficiary, receiving over ?100 following a match against Dundee at Tannadice.
29th April Although Dundee Hibs won their final league game 4 1 at home to Armadale, their lot was not a happy one with the club already the first victims of automatic relegation after in 19th place.
19th August The start of the most painful season inthe club's history, Dundee Hibs drew 2 2 with Partick Thistle 'A' at Firhill, beginning a one year stint out in the cold of the Scottish Alliance League.
1923 18th May At the Scottish League AGM, Dundee Hibs ousted East Stirling by six votes to secure their place back in the league.
18th August New manager Jimmy Brownlie saw his charges draw their opening league game of the season 0 0 against Cowdenbeath at Tannadice.
27th October A 3 0 defeat by Dumbarton at Boghead was an inauspicious start but it heralded the first match under the banner of Dundee United.
1925 11th April Nervous tension saw United stutter to a 2 1 victory over East Stirling, but that was enough to seal promotion to the top division for the first time in the club's short but turbulent history.
18th April A home draw with Broxburn was enough to confirm the club as Second Division Champions the first major honour to come to Tannadice.
15th August There was no fairy tale start to life in the First Division as United lost 4 2 to Raith Rovers on the day that the present off side law was introduced for the first time.
1927 3rd January A goal by Jock Kay, the only one of the derby, enabled United to record their first ever league win over Dundee in front of 25,000 which stands to this day as the biggest crowd to watch a league match at Tannadice.
30th April United bowed out of the First Division after two seasons with a 4 3 defeat by St Mirren at Paisley.
1929 27th April
With promotion back to the First Division already assured, United pipped Morton to the Second Division title thanks to a 3-1 home win over East Stirling.
1930 19th April
Just one season upstairs came to a close after a 1-1 draw against Hibs at Tannadice.
1931 17th January
The club's record score was registered as Nithsdale Wanderers were demolished 14-0 in a Scottish Cup tie at Tannadice.
25th April
Back upstairs again, this time finishing runners-up to Third Lanark following a 2-1 home win over Dunfermline Athletic.
1932 16th April
The yo-yo spell came to an ignominious conclusion. With relegation long since confirmed, Hamilton rubbed salt in the wounds, inflicting a 5-0 reversal in what was to be the last game in the First Division for 38 years.
1934 27th October
United chalked up an 8-0 win against Brechin City at Glebe Park, their biggest ever win away from home in a league match.
28th November
The highest scoring game in the club's history. No less than 15 goals were scored at Tannadice that afternoon with United coming out 9-6 on top against visitors Edinburgh City.
15th December
Another big away win - this time 8-2 at City Park Edinburgh - but this afternoon was as notable for the score as much the crowd. It numbered a mere 85, the lowest ever to see United in action.
1936 13th April
A period of riotous scoring ended with a 12-1 hammering of East Stirling at Tannadice. It meant United had scored 42 goals in the final six league games of the season!
1940 4th May
United contested their first ever major national final, losing out by the narrowest of margins (1-0) to Rangers in the Emergency War Cup in front of a crowd well in excess of the imposed 75,000 limit.
1949 22nd January
United hit the headlines with their greatest ever domestic giant-killing act as Celtic were bundled out of the Scottish Cup by the Second Division Tannadice side who won a pulsating match 4-3.
1954 23rd January
A day to forget in a season to forget as United were crushed 12-1 by Motherwell at Fir Park - the club's heaviest defeat ever.
1960 30th April
A goal by Tommy Campbell, the only one of the home game with Berwick Rangers, sent 16,000 fans wild with delight as United ended almost three decades in the lower reaches to gain a place back amongst Scotland's elite after finishing runners-up to St Johnstone.
1962 10th November
The first ever top team game to be played under the new Tannadice floodlights. It was one to remember too, as Rangers were defeated 2-1.
1963 11th April
United's first appearance in the semifinal of the Scottish Cup at Hampden ended 5-2 in Rangers favour.
1964 30th September
In their first ever League Cup semi-final appearance, United were pipped 2-1 by Rangers in extra-time at Hampden.
1965 2nd June
A 1-0 win over Motherwell wasn't enough to cancel out the Fir Park side's 3-1 first leg advantage in the second leg of the Summer Cup Final.
1966 25th October
United blaze a trail in Europe on their debut, defeating Fairs Cup holders Barcelona 2-1 in the Nou Camp, becoming the first Scottish club to win a European tie in Spain.
1974 4th May
The first ever Scottish Cup Final in which the club competed ended in a 3-0 defeat at the hands of all conquering Celtic at Hampden.
1979 12th December
A red letter day in the club's history as the club celebrate being seventy yea rs old by lifting the League Cup after beating Aberdeen 3-0 in the Dens Park replay.
1980 6th December
Almost exactly twelve months later, that trophy was retained at the same venue in a parochial final against city neighbours, Dundee.
1981 12th May
United lost out to Rangers in their second Scottish Cup Final appearance, losing 4-1 in the last ever final to be the subject of a replay.
28th November
Again United's luck was out against Rangers in a major final, being edged out of making it a hat-trick of League Cup wins after Rangers came back off the ropes to win 2-1.
1983 14th May
The reddest of red letter days in the club's history as Dens Park is once more the scene of a United triumph. This time a 2-1 win on the final day of the season brings the Premier Division title to Tannadice.
1984 25th April
On a hot afternoon in Rome, United's brave bid to reach the European Cup final came to grief. After winning the first leg of the semi-final 2-0, AS Roma came back to squeeze home 3-2 on aggregate.
1984 28th Novernber Once more there was no joy against Rangers in a cup final as United lost their fourth League Cup final 1-0 to the men from lbrox.
1985 18th May Another Hampden hard luck story as Celtic came from behind to win 2-1 and e prevent United making it third time lucky in a Scottish Cup Final.
1987 16th May United's fourth Scottish Cup final appearance ends in bitter disappointment as St Mirren snatch an extra-time winner.
20th May
Despite losing 2-1 to IFK Goteborg on aggregate in the final of the UEFA Cup, this was one of the most magical nights ever at Tannadice. The fantastic reaction by the fans led to United fans being awarded FIFA's Fair Play Award for the sporting way they acknowledged the Swede's victory.
1988 In almost an exact re-run of the 1985 meeting, United again lost out to Celtic in the final of the Scottish Cup, going down 2-1.
1991 Dubbed the 'Family Final', Jim McLean lost out to brother Tommy as Motherwell grabbed an extra-time winner to win a classic encounter 4-3.
1994 21st May Seventh time lucky as United finally lifted the elusive Scottish Cup. Craig Brewster's goal was the only one of the game and enabled United to post their first ever cup win over Rangers and complete the club's domestic set of honours.
1995 13th May The blackest day of the club's recent history as unbroken membership of the Premier Division ended after Celtic's 2-1 win at Tannadice and results elsewhere condemned United to the First Division.
1996 16th May In a nerve-jangling Play-off, United returned to the Premier Division, but only by the skin of their teeth! In the second leg at Tannadice, Partick Thistle led with seconds to go, but Brian Welsh equalised and Owen Coyle steered in an extra-time winner as United bounced back to the top.
1997 30th November A fifth League Cup Final appearance failed to bring further silverware to Tannadice as United went down 3-0 in disappointing fashion to Celtic at Ibrox Stadium.
1998 September A poor start to season 1998-99 prompted the resignation of manager Tommy McLean, and Paul Sturrock was immediately appointed in his place to try and emulate the success that he enjoyed with the club as a player. 1999 May Paul Sturrock's first season Premier League status was retained with a ninth position finish and a managerial pledge of big changes was made to the fans as the Club entered its 90th year.
2000 7 August, Just two matches into the new season, Paul Sturrock tendered his resignation which the Board reluctantly accepted. Alex Smith had been appointed interim Manager with immediate effect. 2001 May United survive relegation after a five goal thriller against St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park. Derek Lilley's second last minute goal saves United. We were staring relegation in the face and being 2-0 down and Charlie Miller missing a penalty in the first half. However United put on the style and score three in the second half. 2002 September Eddie Thompson buys a controlling interest in the club. By that time, United had won only one of their eight SPL matches and the new chairman lost little time in replacing manager Alex Smith with Paul Hegarty.
2003 January Paul Hegarty's appointment was only on a temporary basis and when the following 15 SPL matches produced only a further two victories and were followed by a Scottish Cup defeat at the first hurdle (for the first time in 22 years) Hegarty's reign was brought to an end. Ian McCall, widely regarded as Scotland's most promising young manager, was appointed together with his assistant at Falkirk, Gordon Chisholm, in late January. 2004 May Ian McCall's first full season in charge sees United finish fifth in the SPL. The team is improving and there is optimisim in the United's ranks. 2005 March Eddie Thompson loses patience with Ian McCall's management style and poor results. He is replaced with his Assistant Gordon Chisholm. Chisholm stears the club away from relegation and also manages to get the club to its 8th Scottish Cup Final. Unfortuatley Celtic run out 1-0 winners in the final. 2006 23rd January Craig Brewster is appointed Dundee United manager after the departure of Gordon Chisholm
